@Sean: very difficult to say. I'm planning a thorough review of local websites soon and may have better answers, but my gut feeling is your best bet are dailies like Johnston's Lancashire Evening Post and Trinity Mirror's Wales newspapers.

Paul,

enjoyed the article and was interested in your sggestion about training. Are there are any organisations out there doing weekly papers which are ahead of the game in your opinion on pulling all the technologies from print to web together who would be worth a visit and willing to host a couple of people from our group?

I think this is the most difficult area. Training is an obvious option - but perhaps more effective would be to take journalists out and show them how people are consuming news - perhaps some focus groups or user testing of the news website.

agreed. Nice post. I think some of the issues is that many news orgs think they are evolving. Any advice for approaching newsrooms that don't want to hear about new ideas?
