How to pick a blog topic, cover it and market it
SEO Book.com has an excellent article with a range of tips on how to identify a topic for your blog, cover it well, and market it effectively. As always, here are the bullet points:
- Don’t pick a topic, picka niche within a topic (Innovator, Imitator or Idiot? has some more great advice on this score)
- Do a SWOT analysis
- Ask yourself these questions (from Kotler):
- Does this strategy contain exciting new opportunities?
- Is the plan clear at defining a target market?
- Will the customer in each target market see our offering as superior?
- Do the strategies see, coherent? Are the right tools being used?
- What is the probability that the plan will achieve its stated objectives?
- What would you eliminate from the plan if you only had 80% of your budget?
- What would you add to the plan if you only had 120% of your budget?
And now the marketing advice:
- Quote and link to popular bloggers (because meme aggregators will include a link to you alongside the original)
- Leave valuable comments on popular related blogs
- Write articles for popular blogs
- Create community based ideas
- Add value to ideas
- Actively solicit comments and reply to them
- Encourage contribution and highlight it
- Network offline
- Don’t be afraid of controversy

know what I have to do the get it to show up in a search. Right now it’s somewhere in the yahoo/google netherworld (LOL).
