As long as people understand the difference between reporting and blogging, there is no problem. Unfortunately, so many people do not. It does not help that so much reporting looks like blogging (especially with twitter and such). The line just gets skewed.

But isn't the real point of the case about Alfie Patten that of Child Protection (and Child Protection?).

So that when apparent cases of Freedom of Information and libel are raised and mooted via all the gossip streams, that investigative journalism firmly articulates the underlying issues and implications?

The media is a strong apparatus. Social media has the potential to re or de humanise media witch-hunts but thinkers, writers and policy makers from all backgrounds have a greater responsibility to find the truth on its own 'terms' so we learn from our mistakes get some perspective on the tendency towards legalism, which I think can be a cop out.

The Google News issue is the same one being encountered by the music industry also, as far as I (no legal expert) can make out. The Pirate Bay and other such torrent sites are registered in countries that have laws that are considerably more liberal on freedom of information issues. Sweden et al, bypassing the laws in other countries on copyright etc.

I believe Guido Fawkes has his blog registered in Ireland and operates from Wexford thus avoiding UK contempt of court laws. I presume the opposite could be done too, e.g. I leak a document embargoed by Irish courts to you and you report it, avoiding Irish reporting restrictions...

It's certainly a tricky one.

The other part of the post regarding bloggers unable to find out what they need to find out, is madness.
