As long as Wolfram|Alpha is viewed as a search engine -- it seems like a failure. It is simply a different beast, regardless of what it looks like. It is really what a claims to be a - knowledge base with good search/analysis capabilities. And it can be become quite successful as such.

Meanwhile, it's also good for dialogs like "Hello -- Hello human" and questions like "to be or not to be":

Thanks Colin - hadn't seen that. I did notice that search results have their own keyword-laden url, which Wolfram must be publishing and Google must be indexing.

Interesting (to me at least), is that if you type "convert 500 pounds sterling to euro" into Google, Wolfram Alpha is the top search result.

I guess (in my simple understanding) it is indexing its search terms on Google in some way, meaning that after time it may become as ubiquitous as Wikipedia at the top of the organic rankings.....

Any thoughts?
