Thanks Martin - yes, I'm obviously aware of the standard and that can only help. Now, over to the advertising industry...

Thanks Paul - very helpful (I would have joined you had I not been at the Future of Journalism conf in Cardiff).
To your point 'the advertising and news industries needed to be more active in defining common standard' - we (Media Standards Trust) have a big project trying to address an significant aspect of that. The Transparency Initiative (in partnership with Sir Tim Berners-Lee's WSRI) is all about how to make information - particularly provenance - about news articles machine readable.
Value Added News (http://valueaddednews.org) explains how to do this using hNews - an open news data format that anyone producing journalism can easily integrate to their articles (Associated Press are including it in all their articles from November).

Very useful, post, thanks Paul, it's clarified a few things I wasn't really sure I understood properly.
Linked data is, for me, one of the key ways journalists and their newspapers can regain their audience's trust. If facts, sources, quotes, images and video can be authenticated and put in context by a user there is, I'd hope, a greater chance of growing affinity and relationships with either the individual or the brand.
Personally I think this means some some fundamental 'rip up and start again' approaches (both in terms of systems and mindsets) but as we move towards more OAuth technologies I'd expect this to become easier.

As for linking it would be most helpful to newspaper site to facilitate easy and accurate quoting with links by using javascript so that someone wanting to quote would select some text, click and get a popup with the selected text plus a short-link to the specific page.

Bit.ly the URL shortener does that with their bookmarklet and it is very convenient
