This is an interesting post. I usually call the community of journalism students that come to our site "users," but I do so flippantly, without giving it much thought. I'd like to re-think it, and be more intentional, as I want to create the feeling of community for site visitors. On the other hand, at the Online News Association conference this year, we were told in one session to view our "users" as ruthless, selfish and lazy, because that is what they are: they are on our site to use what we have, and will leave when they get bored.

"user" is so much more encompassing than "reader", IMO. users can interact with a site or product, providing user-generated content, etc. "reader" implies to me simply reading, and makes me think of books!

Note: Matt Kelly finds my characterization of his position "a bit laughable." In response, I wasn't seeking to characterise his position but rather draw on it as a hook to hang the general point on. It's not the ideal illustration (his point, as I see it, isn't about the term user as much as about whether some users are more desirable than others), but still a relevant quote to illustrate how the term generates strong reactions.
