I also grew up in birmingham, but have since moved further north. I found Casey Rain's tumblr site when it had only a couple of posts. His blog enabled me to check out the situation in Bham, something I am very grateful for, so that I could ensure my friends and family were safe. I probably refreshed his site every 5 minutes over the last 48 hours! Thanks to the blog's author to filter fiction from fact, and for keeping us updated on the state of our beloved city!

Could not agree more with this article, both Casey and Sangat TV have done a brilliant job during so much uncertainty and rumour, particularly as the Birmingham riots have received disappointingly disproportionate coverage on the main news channel. Well done to you all, People in Birmingham and the surrounding areas are very grateful!

Casey Rain did a fantastic job of keeping everybody informed and updated. I'm from Birmingham but now live in Wales and I was concerned about friends and family still living there. His Tumblr page was always correct or advised people to wait until confirmation had happened of certain events. He was much more on the ball than the bbc or any other news provider.
He should be commended for his dedication to his community and the number of hours he put in to report on the horrors of the last few days.
Well done Casey! And thank you x

The American concept of civic journalism extended and applied to community television - and a breath of fresh air!
One BBC manager suggested to me that the reason their Manchester/Salford pictures were poor was because a cameraman had been assaulted - Was he suggesting there was only one camera operator? Or was he suggesting that the BBC had too few people on the ground who'd been adequately trained in such situations? Greenslade has written today regarding what is essentially a common sense approach to covering this kind of situation: http://tinyurl.com/3sb6yo4
It may well be that, for H&S reasons, the BBC had to pull untrained teams from the scene, leaving coverage very thin for a while - Sangat TV were not similarly restrained and with their own style and local knowledge served those who were more interested in what was happening in that community.
