<p>Newspapers take a lot of flak when they or mis-attribute or fail to acknowledge the work of bloggers and members of the public in reporting a story, so it was refreshing to see my two local newspapers quickly respond to amend online reports following a number of corrective comments. But more interesting was to see how they reaped the benefits of that responsiveness.<span id="more-3159"></span></p>
<p>One story &#8211; about the <a href="http://www.birminghampost.net/news/politics-news/2009/08/04/cost-of-new-birmingham-city-council-website-spirals-to-2-8m-65233-24307674/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.birminghampost.net/news/politics-news/2009/08/04/cost-of-new-birmingham-city-council-website-spirals-to-2-8m-65233-24307674/?referer=');">council&#8217;s £2.2m overspend on a new website </a>- said it was based on a Freedom of Information request by &#8220;a member of the public&#8221;. Public Affairs Editor Paul Dale, who told me he spotted the story <a href="http://twitter.com/jonwalker121/statuses/3104230760" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/jonwalker121/statuses/3104230760?referer=');">following a tweet</a>, failed to mention that that &#8220;member of the public&#8221; was actually Heather Brooke, the investigative journalist who helped break the MPs&#8217; expenses scandal &#8211; or that she submitted the FOI request as part of an investigation on Help Me Investigate, on which she works (the tweet and <a href="http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/costs_of_birminghamgovuk#comment-3720" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/costs_of_birminghamgovuk_comment-3720?referer=');">the FOI request</a> both credited Help Me Investigate by the way).</p>
<div class="kwout" style="text-align: left"><a href="http://www.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2009/08/04/new-birmingham-city-council-website-costs-spiral-to-2-8m-97319-24309788/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2009/08/04/new-birmingham-city-council-website-costs-spiral-to-2-8m-97319-24309788/?referer=');"><img class="alignleft" src="http://kwout.com/cutout/h/95/3s/2uk_bor.jpg" alt="http://www.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2009/08/04/new-birmingham-city-council-website-costs-spiral-to-2-8m-97319-24309788/" width="354" height="49" /></a></div>
<p>The newspaper&#8217;s multimedia editor Steve Nicholls quickly amended the story following a comment. But note what happened next: because The Birmingham Post responded positively, I returned to the site and commented again. And I told my friends, who told their friends, many of whom clicked on a link and visited the piece, and some of whom &#8211; <em>who had never commented on a Post story before - registered in order to congratulate the Post on their responsibility (see screengrab above).</em></p>
<p>So through simply being responsive to comments and acknowledging a mistake, that newspaper benefited from extra pageviews, extra time spent on the site, extra registrations and extra comments &#8211; not to mention the intangible goodwill generated towards the paper (and hopefully a few new print sales too).</p>
<p>Pete Ashton <a href="http://twitter.com/peteashton/status/3168013385" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/peteashton/status/3168013385?referer=');">pointed out that their response may simply have been due to the person commenting</a>, but this wasn&#8217;t an isolated example. A previous story (also generated by Help Me Investigate) <a href="http://www.birminghampost.net/news/west-midlands-news/2009/07/27/help-me-investigate-website-uncovers-parking-ticket-hotspots-in-birmingham-65233-24244387/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.birminghampost.net/news/west-midlands-news/2009/07/27/help-me-investigate-website-uncovers-parking-ticket-hotspots-in-birmingham-65233-24244387/?referer=');">looked at the most-ticketed streets in Birmingham</a> &#8211; the comments thread demonstrated a similar responsiveness to different commenters &#8211; this time from reporter Tom Scotney (see screengrab below).</p>
<p>I know a lot of news organisations are implementing online strategies to both increase the number of pageviews and the amount of time people spend on the site &#8211;  giving journalists and multimedia editors time to respond to comments and correct copy in this way has to be one of the most sensible planks of any such strategy.</p>

UPDATE: <a href="http://www.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2009/07/27/alum-rock-road-is-the-top-birmingham-street-for-parking-tickets-issued-97319-24247834/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2009/07/27/alum-rock-road-is-the-top-birmingham-street-for-parking-tickets-issued-97319-24247834/?referer=');">The Birmingham Mail have also published a report, from which the map above comes</a>.</p>
<p>The site has only been public for a couple of weeks, and we have refrained from any launch or publicity, preferring to let it grow organically in these early stages.</p>
<p>But the early results have been extremely encouraging.</p>
<p>Although the parking ticket story is the first to appear in traditional media, it is not the first investigation to be completed on the site. <a href="http://helpmeinvestigate.com/investigations/29-what-is-the-tracking-process-for-petitions-handed-in-to-birmingham-city-council" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/helpmeinvestigate.com/investigations/29-what-is-the-tracking-process-for-petitions-handed-in-to-birmingham-city-council?referer=');">One investigation</a> was completed during the testing stage; <a href="http://helpmeinvestigate.com/investigations/40-why-is-a-new-bus-company-allowed-on-an-existing-route-with-same-number-but-higher-prices" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/helpmeinvestigate.com/investigations/40-why-is-a-new-bus-company-allowed-on-an-existing-route-with-same-number-but-higher-prices?referer=');">another</a> shortly after. Both had resolutions that might not have made traditional media, but were important to the users and, for me, resulted in the sort of engagement you want from media (more on that below).<span id="more-3066"></span></p>
<p>The most exciting investigation, however, was <a href="http://helpmeinvestigate.com/investigations/49-when-can-we-expect-a-new-birmingham-gov-website" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/helpmeinvestigate.com/investigations/49-when-can-we-expect-a-new-birmingham-gov-website?referer=');">into the long-awaited website for Birmingham City Council</a>. That dug up what appeared to be an overspend on the website which we&#8217;re still investigating. It&#8217;s not clear whether it was a coincidence that <a href="http://www.birminghampost.net/news/west-midlands-news/2009/07/03/launch-of-new-birmingham-city-council-website-hit-by-problems-65233-24066557/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.birminghampost.net/news/west-midlands-news/2009/07/03/launch-of-new-birmingham-city-council-website-hit-by-problems-65233-24066557/?referer=');">a story on the issue appeared in the local paper the same day</a>, but it certainly seems that the Council&#8217;s web team launched <a href="http://twitter.com/BCCWebTeam" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/BCCWebTeam?referer=');">their Twitter feed</a> that day as a result, and <a href="http://www.birminghampost.net/news/politics-news/2009/07/20/council-fears-website-ridicule-65233-24191991/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.birminghampost.net/news/politics-news/2009/07/20/council-fears-website-ridicule-65233-24191991/?referer=');">further stories were generated later</a>.</p>
<p>Particularly  interesting was the fact that someone who had worked on the project set up <a href="http://twitter.com/peskypeople" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/peskypeople?referer=');">another Twitter feed</a> to give further information to the person who began it. You can read more about how the investigation developed on <a href="http://joshuahart.co.uk/2009/07/03/help-me-investigate-birminghamgov/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/joshuahart.co.uk/2009/07/03/help-me-investigate-birminghamgov/?referer=');">Josh Hart&#8217;s blog post (down at the time of writing)</a>.</p>
<p>And the story hasn&#8217;t yet finished &#8211; the site&#8217;s Support Journalist Heather Brooke wrote the most impressive Freedom of Information request I&#8217;ve ever seen, asking for information on the process of building the website. <a href="http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/costs_of_birminghamgovuk" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/costs_of_birminghamgovuk?referer=');">Just read it</a>. We now await the results.</p>
<h2>Engaging and social</h2>
<p>What has also been extremely encouraging is the way the site seems to be engaging users in a different way to traditional publishing &#8211; one of the objectives of Help Me Investigate.</p>
<p>My own experience of the site has been this: the social dynamics involve you in issues that you might otherwise never explore. I now know things about bus deregulation, for example, that I would never have read about. It was my desire to help a friend that made me read them.</p>
<p>Likewise, when people help you with an investigation there&#8217;s an instinct to want to help back. This generates a feedback loop where you are each helping add little bits to the investigation as a way to thank the other people who helped you. You do more than you would alone &#8211; another of the site&#8217;s objectives.</p>
<p>These are still early days with small numbers of people and the site is developing continuously (we&#8217;re using an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agile_software_development" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agile_software_development?referer=');">agile development</a> approach which means it&#8217;s changing in response to how people use it rather than our assumptions). It will get better as it gets used more, and we learn more, but I&#8217;m surprised how well it&#8217;s working even at this early stage &#8211; in some ways I think the simple framing of the site to &#8216;Help Me Investigate&#8217; results in work you wouldn&#8217;t get elsewhere.</p>
<p>This week marks the point at which we are that bit much more public, and that bit much more &#8216;proven&#8217;, so I expect things to ramp up a bit.</p>
<p>In particular, I have now <a href="http://helpmeinvestigate.com/investigations/62-which-councils-issue-the-most-parking-tickets-per-head-of-population" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/helpmeinvestigate.com/investigations/62-which-councils-issue-the-most-parking-tickets-per-head-of-population?referer=');">started an investigation into councils and parking tickets nationally: which are the worst and best offenders</a>? This should test how we expand the experience gained in a local investigation into a national one.</p>
<p>If you want an invite you can request one from the <a href="http://helpmeinvestigate.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/helpmeinvestigate.com/?referer=');">Help Me Investigate home page</a>. I&#8217;ve also been writing about what we&#8217;ve been learning along the way on a <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/helpmeinvestigate/blog/">Help Me Investigate blog</a>. Comments, questions and suggestions very much welcome.</p>

Just follow the electronic trail</a>.</em></p>
<h2><strong>How journalists can use web bookmarking services to manage, find and publish documents.</strong></h2>
<p>Every newspaper has a library, and most journalists have kept some sort of cuttings file for reference. But what if you could search that cuttings file like you search <a class="zem_slink" title="Google" rel="homepage" href="http://www.google.com/about.html" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.google.com/about.html?referer=');">Google</a>? What if you could find similar articles and documents? What if you could let your readers see your raw material?</p>
<p>That&#8217;s what online bookmarking &#8211; or &#8216;<a class="zem_slink" title="Social bookmarking" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking?referer=');">social bookmarking</a>&#8216; &#8211; tools allow you to do. And they have enormous potential for journalists.</p>
<p>There are a number of social bookmarking services. <a class="zem_slink" title="Del.icio.us" rel="homepage" href="http://del.icio.us/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/del.icio.us/?referer=');">Del.icio.us</a> is best known and most widely used and supported. For this reason this article will focus mostly on Del.icio.us.<span id="more-816"></span></p>
<h2>Managing cuttings</h2>
<p>The most basic function of bookmarking services is allowing you to effectively manage &#8216;cuttings&#8217;, i.e. online reports, webpages, and articles.</p>
<p>When you register at Del.icio.us you can add buttons to your browser. The next time you&#8217;re on a webpage that you think you might want to refer to later, click on that &#8216;add to del.icio.us&#8217; button to bookmark it. You&#8217;ll be given some extra options before you save &#8211; and this is where it gets really useful.</p>
<p>The first option is to add &#8216;notes&#8217;. This is a useful place to copy a key quote to, or your own remarks. The second option is to add &#8216;tags&#8217;, i.e. categories, key words, people, etc. The great thing is that this can go in as many categories as you want. So you might <a class="zem_slink" title="Tag (metadata)" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_%28metadata%29" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_28metadata_29?referer=');">tag</a> something with &#8216;health&#8217;, &#8216;NHS&#8217;, &#8216;report&#8217;, and &#8216;experts&#8217; &#8211; or &#8216;localhistory&#8217;, &#8216;birmingham&#8217; and &#8216;industry&#8217;, for example.</p>
<p>These tags will then be listed on the right hand side of your Del.icio.us page so you can instantly access anything with a particular tag.</p>
<h2>Finding new leads and information</h2>
<p>Once you start bookmarking webpages, it gets interesting. The &#8216;social&#8217; bit of social bookmarking is that you can see anything tagged &#8216;NHS&#8217; by anyone else, helping you to spot leads or information you would otherwise have missed.</p>
<p>You can also see who bookmarked the same webpages as you (it will say &#8216;saved by 23 other people&#8217;, for instance, underneath), and what else they have bookmarked.</p>
<p>And if you are interested in the sorts of things a particular user is bookmarking, once you&#8217;re on their page you can click &#8216;add X to my network&#8217; to do just that &#8211; your page will then contain a link to &#8216;your network&#8217; which will show anything bookmarked by those users. Regularly checking this can keep you up to date on your chosen field, as well as proving new leads. Consider them your researchers, or tipsters.</p>
<h2>Publishing</h2>
<p>Some have called it &#8216;link journalism&#8217; &#8211; the very act of gathering sources as an act of journalism itself. Others point to the way the internet can make journalism more transparent: no longer is there a restriction on space or time &#8211; readers can, if they wish, click through to full documents, reports and archive material. Or video, audio and images. Or online tools and services.</p>
<p>Social bookmarking sites make it easy to make your raw material available. At its most basic you can include a link at the bottom of your article to your Del.icio.us page &#8211; which is what Jo Ind at <a class="zem_slink" title="Birmingham Post" rel="homepage" href="http://icbirmingham.co.uk/birminghampost" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/icbirmingham.co.uk/birminghampost?referer=');">the Birmingham Post</a> does with her health articles (<a href="http://del.icio.us/birminghampost" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/del.icio.us/birminghampost?referer=');">del.icio.us/birminghampost</a>), or <a href="http://del.icio.us/r4ipm" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/del.icio.us/r4ipm?referer=');">Radio 4&#8242;s iPM</a>. You could link to subcategories (my bookmarks on social bookmarking are at <a href="http://del.icio.us/paulb/socialbookmarking" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/del.icio.us/paulb/socialbookmarking?referer=');">http://del.icio.us/paulb/socialbookmarking</a>, for instance). While the article remains the same, the links are continually updated, by you.</p>
<p>But you can also use Del.icio.us&#8217; built in RSS feeds to automatically publish bookmarked articles on your article webpages (or indeed anywhere you wish), as The Guardian&#8217;s Jemima Kiss does with her &#8216;<a href="http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/digitalcontent/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/blogs.guardian.co.uk/digitalcontent/?referer=');">PDA Newsbucket&#8217;</a>, and many blogs do with a simple sidebar widget.</p>

			</a>
		</div>
<p><em>The following is a longer version of <a href="http://www.journalism.co.uk/7/articles/531439.php" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.journalism.co.uk/7/articles/531439.php?referer=');">the article that appeared in Journalism.co.uk last week</a>, with some extra tools and quotes.</em></p>
<p>It&#8217;s almost impossible to sum up <a class="zem_slink" title="Twitter" rel="homepage" href="http://www.twitter.com" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.twitter.com?referer=');">Twitter</a> in one line. To some, it is a way of delivering content to mobiles as headline text alerts. To others, it&#8217;s a social networking tool for getting contacts and leads. Some use it as a research tool for developing stories; and still others as a project management tool to gather a number of contributors together &#8211; for example, <a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/commuter_feed_twitter_mashup.php" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.readwriteweb.com/archives/commuter_feed_twitter_mashup.php?referer=');">drivers posting updates on traffic</a>.</p>
<p>In other words, it is what you make it and the only way to figure it out is to start using it. The following is a guide to getting started on Twitter as a journalist, and some of the things that can be done with it.<span id="more-786"></span></p>
<h2>Twitter for newsgathering</h2>
<p>Contacts are central to a journalist&#8217;s work. Twitter makes it easier to find them. But whereas, for instance, <a class="zem_slink" title="Facebook" rel="homepage" href="http://www.facebook.com/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.facebook.com/?referer=');">Facebook</a> requires someone to accept you as their &#8216;friend&#8217; before you get updates; you can follow people on Twitter regardless. It&#8217;s where blogging meets social networking.<!--more--></p>
<p>The more people you follow on Twitter, the more likely you are to come across a lead or a useful contact. News of <a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/earthquake_in_uk_news_broken_on_twitter.php" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.readwriteweb.com/archives/earthquake_in_uk_news_broken_on_twitter.php?referer=');">the recent UK earthquake, for example, broke first on Twitter</a>, while last year news of a fire in <a href="http://blogs.journalism.co.uk/editors/2007/11/12/breaking-news-coverage-on-twitter-of-fire-in-east-london/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/blogs.journalism.co.uk/editors/2007/11/12/breaking-news-coverage-on-twitter-of-fire-in-east-london/?referer=');">East London broke there too</a>. And even as I type this, someone I know at St Pancras station has <a href="http://twitter.com/Cybersoc/statuses/791061095" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/Cybersoc/statuses/791061095?referer=');">twittered that it is being evacuated</a>. You might also use <a href="http://www.twitterverse.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.twitterverse.com/?referer=');">Twitterverse</a> or <a href="http://picobuzz.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/picobuzz.com/?referer=');">PicoBuzz </a>to spot important phrases (e.g. events).</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a simple ticklist to fill your Twitter contacts book:</p>
<ol>
<li>Obviously you should begin by searching Twitter for people you know, or know <em>of</em>, in your field. The <a href="http://twitter.com/uklabour" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/uklabour?referer=');">Labour Party</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/libdems" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/libdems?referer=');">Lib Dems</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/Conservatives" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/Conservatives?referer=');">Conservatives </a>all have their own Twitter accounts, for example, as do <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/may/17/guardianweeklytechnologysection.socialnetworking" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/may/17/guardianweeklytechnologysection.socialnetworking?referer=');">some politicians</a>. But beware of hoaxers. <a href="http://twitter.com/chucknorris" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/chucknorris?referer=');">This isn&#8217;t really Chuck Norris</a>, for example. <em>Is it?</em></li>
<li>Then, look at who they&#8217;re following (I find entering someone&#8217;s username on <a href="http://www.gridjit.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.gridjit.com/?referer=');">Gridjit </a>is the best way of seeing someone&#8217;s contacts and what they&#8217;re saying, or you can <a href="http://quotably.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/quotably.com/?referer=');">use Quotably</a> to follow their conversations).</li>
<li>Then try <a href="http://www.chrisfinke.com/twitslikeme/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.chrisfinke.com/twitslikeme/?referer=');">Twits Like Me</a> to find people with similar interests (based on what you&#8217;ve twittered)</li>
<li>and <a href="http://www.crazybob.org/twubble/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.crazybob.org/twubble/?referer=');">Twubble </a>(based on your friends) or<a href="http://www.whoshouldifollow.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.whoshouldifollow.com/?referer=');"> Who Should I Follow?</a> (which allows you to adjust according to whether you want people nearer your location or more or less popular)</li>
<li>and <a href="http://www.tweetscan.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.tweetscan.com/?referer=');">Tweetscan</a> for key words (e.g. &#8220;health&#8221;, &#8220;NHS&#8221;).</li>
<li>Finally <a href="http://www.twitterlocal.net/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.twitterlocal.net/?referer=');">Twitterlocal</a> will help you find twitterers in your local area.</li>
<li>You can also find <a href="http://twitterpacks.pbwiki.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitterpacks.pbwiki.com/?referer=');">a list of significant Twitter users in various fields at the Twitter Pack Project</a>. However, as this is a wiki there is a risk that people have added themselves. It&#8217;s also US-focused.</li>
</ol>
<p><a class="zem_slink" title="Birmingham Post" rel="homepage" href="http://icbirmingham.co.uk/birminghampost" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/icbirmingham.co.uk/birminghampost?referer=');">The Birmingham Post</a>, and particularly reporter Jo Geary, are leading Twitter-users among regional newspapers. She sees it as a great way of building a relationship with your contacts and target audience.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not just popping in, getting something, and popping out, but building something more. And because of that it&#8217;s also become a support network of people who help me, and vice versa. It moves into the crowdsourcing thing &#8211; if you want to do something you can put out questions and get answers.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>It&#8217;s all part of the wider move of journalism to becoming a conversation with readers. Abbie Lundberg, for instance, <a href="http://advice.cio.com/abbie_lundberg/the_business_value_of_twitter" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/advice.cio.com/abbie_lundberg/the_business_value_of_twitter?referer=');">wrote one article</a> by soliciting tweets on the topic from her followers. Nico Luchsinger even <a href="http://150worte.ch/blog/?p=219" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/150worte.ch/blog/?p=219&amp;referer=');">conducted his interview with me via Twitter</a> (which gave me the unique experience of being interviewed while shopping in Tesco.)</p>
<h3>Managing your Twitter feeds</h3>
<p>Once you&#8217;ve set up all those contacts, it&#8217;s useful to create some filters to help manage the incoming information. <a href="http://www.gridjit.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.gridjit.com/?referer=');">Gridjit</a>, again, has a clearer interface for viewing tweets. Desktop applications like <a href="http://www.twhirl.org/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.twhirl.org/?referer=');">Twhirl </a>will give you an audio alert; <a href="http://getsnitter.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/getsnitter.com/?referer=');">Snitter </a>allows you to filter your tweets &#8211; for key words or tweets containing links for instance. You can also set up pages to organise tweets from &#8216;crowds&#8217; of twitterers (for example, friends, colleagues, contacts) using <a href="http://crowdstatus.com/Default.aspx" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/crowdstatus.com/Default.aspx?referer=');">Crowdstatus.com</a>.</p>
<p>You can &#8211; and should &#8211; set up Twitter to send updates to your mobile phone (click on &#8216;add device&#8217; or look in settings). It&#8217;s free, and is particularly useful for following what&#8217;s happening while you&#8217;re on the move. But pick your sources carefully &#8211; Twitter will only send 250 updates per week, and it&#8217;s easy to hit that.</p>
<p>The first thing you should do once you&#8217;ve set up Twitter to send text alerts is to text Twitter the word &#8220;track&#8221; followed by your username. This means Twitter will text you whenever anyone mentions your username on Twitter &#8211; very useful for picking up messages aimed at you. You can use the same trick to track mentions of key words in your area, such as a key employer or your own organisation (<a href="http://twitter.com/help/lingo" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/help/lingo?referer=');">More tips on mobile commands can be found here</a>). If you prefer email alerts, <a href="http://www.mobifeedlive.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.mobifeedlive.com/?referer=');">MobiFeedLive.com</a> and <a href="http://www.davidsterry.com/tweetscan" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.davidsterry.com/tweetscan?referer=');">Tweet Scan</a> (not to be confused with Tweetscan) provide them.</p>
<p>You can also follow links that are getting passed about a lot on Twitter though <a href="http://twitterbuzz.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitterbuzz.com/?referer=');">Twitterbuzz</a> and <a href="http://twitturly.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitturly.com/?referer=');">Twitt(url)y</a>. While <a href="http://twist.flaptor.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twist.flaptor.com/?referer=');">Twist</a> is a pretty impressive equivalent of Google Trends (<em>from comments</em>).</p>
<h2>Twitter for news publishing, distribution and creation</h2>
<p>If you want an idea of what Twitter can do for news publishing check out <a href="http://twitter.com/breakingnewson" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/breakingnewson?referer=');">BreakingNewsOn</a>. Headline alerts of breaking news that people can receive on their mobiles are the most obvious application, and used by dozens of organisations including the <a href="http://twitter.com/tw/search/users?q=bbc" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/tw/search/users?q=bbc&amp;referer=');">BBC</a>, the <a href="http://twitter.com/guardiannews" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/guardiannews?referer=');">Guardian </a>and <a href="http://twitter.com/cnnbrk" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/cnnbrk?referer=');">CNN</a> (<a href="http://red66.com/2008/02/a-list-of-news-organizations-using-twitter/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/red66.com/2008/02/a-list-of-news-organizations-using-twitter/?referer=');">This post has a list of news organisations using Twitter</a>). It&#8217;s a good way of alerting people to your content, as well as inviting participation, as Emap&#8217;s David Cushman <a href="http://twitter.com/davidcushman/statuses/794948694" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/davidcushman/statuses/794948694?referer=');">recently tweeted</a>: &#8220;Comments on my blog are going mad. Nothing has changed except I now use twitter regularly.&#8221;</p>
<p>Many newspapers have separate Twitter accounts for different sections, such as <a href="http://twitter.com/OregonianBiz%20" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/OregonianBiz_20?referer=');">business</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/OregonianTraff%20" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/OregonianTraff_20?referer=');">traffic</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/OregonianSports%20" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/OregonianSports_20?referer=');">sports</a>. Sky even have one for <a href="http://twitter.com/MadeleineNews" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/MadeleineNews?referer=');">news about Madeleine McCann</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://twitterfeed.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitterfeed.com/?referer=');">Twitterfeed </a>will save you typing updates by pushing RSS feeds from your newspaper to a Twitter account, but this means you have to write the article first and risk missing the scoop. Instead it&#8217;s better to &#8216;tweet&#8217; (post to Twitter) <em>before </em>you write the article &#8211; ensuring you get to the top of Google quickly, <a href="http://blogs.birminghampost.net/news/2008/04/how-the-birmingham-post-scoope.html" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/blogs.birminghampost.net/news/2008/04/how-the-birmingham-post-scoope.html?referer=');">as Birmingham Post editor Marc Reeves did with the arrest of Karren Brady</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m only followed by 30 people or so &#8230; But these people are all &#8230; in the business of sharing information and knowledge. Consequently, a number of them followed my link to the story on the Post website, and started to talk about it on their own blogs and again through Twitter, with the effect that the Post site received an incredible number of hits as word spread.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>If you really want to track how many people are clicking on any of your links you can also use <a href="http://tweetburner.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/tweetburner.com/?referer=');">Tweetburner</a> (or <a href="http://twitturly.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitturly.com/?referer=');">Twitt(url)y</a> to see what they&#8217;re saying if they pass it on). Or you can use <a href="http://intwition.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/intwition.com/?referer=');">Intwition </a>to see who&#8217;s linking to a particular domain.</p>
<p>Twitter is particularly useful for journalists reporting live via text message themselves. <a href="http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1310773,00.html" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/news.sky.com/skynews/article/0_30000-1310773_00.html?referer=');">Sky reporter Julia Reid recently used it to post her &#8220;minute-by-minute&#8221; experiences at Heathrow&#8217;s Terminal 5</a>. Robert LaHue <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2008/04/02/twitter-what-are-you-doing-in-your-newsroom-what-would-you-like-to-do/">used it &#8220;to semi-liveblog a board meeting via texting</a>&#8221; and it&#8217;s often <a href="http://blog.abrenna.com/twitter-journalism/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/blog.abrenna.com/twitter-journalism/?referer=');">used at conferences</a> and events. You can also download applications that allow you to update Twitter from your mobile &#8211; <a href="http://www.simplehelp.net/2008/04/16/20-ways-to-use-twitter-on-your-cell-phone-or-mobile-internet-device/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.simplehelp.net/2008/04/16/20-ways-to-use-twitter-on-your-cell-phone-or-mobile-internet-device/?referer=');">this article compares 20 of them</a>.</p>
<h2>Going beyond 140 characters</h2>
<p>And if you&#8217;re frustrated by the 140 character limit try some of these tools:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://shorttext.com/twitzer.aspx" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/shorttext.com/twitzer.aspx?referer=');">Twitzer </a>is a Firefox extension that allows you to write tweets over 140 characters. <a href="http://www.messagedance.com/twittermail" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.messagedance.com/twittermail?referer=');">MessageDance </a>does much the same via email, and also allows comments on tweets.</li>
<li><a href="http://twi8r.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twi8r.com/?referer=');">twi8r </a>translates text speak into &#8216;English&#8217; and vice versa, allowing you to truncate your messages</li>
<li><a href="http://twittermail.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twittermail.com/?referer=');">Twittermail.com</a> and <a href="http://tweetahead.grotonma.net/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/tweetahead.grotonma.net/?referer=');">Tweetahead </a>allow you to pre-schedule tweets to be posted (for when you are not at a computer); the latter also lets you send and receive tweets via email</li>
<li><a href="http://www.tweet-r.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.tweet-r.com/?referer=');">Tweetr is a Twitter reader that </a>allows you to send files up to 10MB through Twitter.</li>
<li><a href="http://twitpic.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitpic.com/?referer=');">TwitPic</a> allows you to send images from your phone and not only posts links straight to your Twitter account but allows people to post comments that are then posted on their own Twitter page (with a link to the photo). <a href="http://www.mobypicture.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.mobypicture.com/?referer=');">Mobypicture </a>does something similar. <a href="http://www.twittersoap.com/index.php?p=about" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.twittersoap.com/index.php?p=about&amp;referer=');">TwitterSoap</a> is a mashup of Mobypicture and Twitter.</li>
<li><a href="http://snaptweet.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/snaptweet.com/?referer=');">SnapTweet</a> posts your latest Flickr picture to Twitter; <a href="http://autopostr.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/autopostr.com/?referer=');">Autopostr.com</a> does much the same.</li>
<li><a href="http://twiddeo.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twiddeo.com/?referer=');">Twiddeo </a>allows you to do the same with video.</li>
<li><a href="http://twixxer.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twixxer.com/?referer=');">Twixxer</a> does both photo and video sharing</li>
<li>And American and Canadian users can phone in their tweets using <a href="http://jott.com/Default.aspx" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/jott.com/Default.aspx?referer=');">Jott</a>.</li>
<li>Or you can use <a href="http://30boxes.com/blog/index.php/2007/04/09/power-twitter-by-30-boxes/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/30boxes.com/blog/index.php/2007/04/09/power-twitter-by-30-boxes/?referer=');">the Firefox plugin Power Twitter</a>, which does most of the above and much, much more.</li>
</ul>
<p><img src="http://l.yimg.com/www.flickr.com/images/spaceball.gif" alt="" /><br />
But Twitter becomes really impressive when you tap into its social, conversational nature &#8211; or combine the RSS feeds from a number of twitterers. Shawn Smith used it to create the <a href="http://www.mlive.com/twitter/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.mlive.com/twitter/?referer=');">Michigan Twitter Network</a>, which &#8220;follows more than 1,300 Michigan twitterers. We’ve gained about 200+ followers and use this account @mlive to send breaking news alerts and also poll users.&#8221; (I&#8217;ve <a href="http://birminghambloggers.com/twitter/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/birminghambloggers.com/twitter/?referer=');">created something similar for Birmingham twitterers</a>). In Spain, ADN.es used it to follow <a href="http://www.adn.es/politica/elecciones_2008/debate" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.adn.es/politica/elecciones_2008/debate?referer=');">voter reactions during a televised presidential candidate debate on TV</a>.</p>
<p>My <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2008/04/07/twitter-reviewing-some-reflections/">recent experiment with, of all things, a live book review on Twitter</a> demonstrated that the boundary between publishing and conversation becomes blurred when you use the technology &#8211; confusing if you&#8217;re bothered about semantics, but encouraging if you&#8217;re interested in positive relationships between the journalist and reader.</p>
<p>At the end of the day, Twitter is just a platform. What I&#8217;ve outlined here is just the start, and <a href="http://twitter.pbwiki.com/Apps" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.pbwiki.com/Apps?referer=');">there are plenty of experiments being done</a> &#8211; the really interesting stuff starts when you try something completely new&#8230;<a href="http://red66.com/2008/02/a-list-of-news-organizations-using-twitter/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/red66.com/2008/02/a-list-of-news-organizations-using-twitter/?referer=');"><br />

<p>Sometimes I feel like <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2007/11/12/five-ws-and-a-h-that-should-come-after-every-story-a-model-for-the-21st-century-newsroom-pt3/">my vision of the future</a> is slowly coming true in front of my eyes. Yesterday I <a href="http://twitter.com/BhamPostJoanna/statuses/790285199" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/twitter.com/BhamPostJoanna/statuses/790285199?referer=');">discovered </a>that <a class="zem_slink" title="Birmingham Post" rel="homepage" href="http://icbirmingham.co.uk/birminghampost" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/icbirmingham.co.uk/birminghampost?referer=');">the Birmingham Post</a> features writer <strong>Jo Ind</strong> has started incorporating <a class="zem_slink" title="Del.icio.us" rel="homepage" href="http://del.icio.us/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/del.icio.us/?referer=');">Del.icio.us</a> <a class="zem_slink" title="Social bookmarking" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking?referer=');">social bookmarks</a> into her articles. If you <a href="http://www.birminghampost.net/life-leisure-birmingham-guide/postfeatures/2008/04/15/select-research-tackles-women-s-weight-issues-65233-20769350/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.birminghampost.net/life-leisure-birmingham-guide/postfeatures/2008/04/15/select-research-tackles-women-s-weight-issues-65233-20769350/?referer=');">look at the bottom of this health article</a> you&#8217;ll see the following line:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em>To learn more about Select Research and the body volume index, see </em><a href="http://del.icio.us/birminghampost/bodyfat" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/del.icio.us/birminghampost/bodyfat?referer=');"><em>Jo Ind&#8217;s suggested links</em></a><em> or visit </em><a href="http://blogs.birminghampost.net/lifestyle/2008/04/do-doctors-think-you-must-have.html" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/blogs.birminghampost.net/lifestyle/2008/04/do-doctors-think-you-must-have.html?referer=');"><em>her blog</em></a><em>.&#8221; </em></p></blockquote>
<p>Jo Ind&#8217;s suggested links are on Del.icio.us The tool is also being used by Radio 4&#8242;s iPM, <a href="http://http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2007/11/13/ipm-have-they-been-reading-my-model-for-a-21st-century-newsroom/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/http_//onlinejournalismblog.com/2007/11/13/ipm-have-they-been-reading-my-model-for-a-21st-century-newsroom/?referer=');">as previously reported</a> and Jemima Kiss integrates her feed into <a href="http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/digitalcontent/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/blogs.guardian.co.uk/digitalcontent/?referer=');">her Guardian blog</a> as the PDA &#8216;Newsbucket&#8217; (much as this blog and many others do as an albeit more prosaic &#8220;delicious feed&#8221;).</p>
<p>But phrasing the link as &#8216;suggested links&#8217; (rather than &#8216;iPM Delicious&#8217;) and positioning it at the bottom of an article rather than as a sidebar widget is a better idea, and closer to what I was suggesting in <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2007/11/12/five-ws-and-a-h-that-should-come-after-every-story-a-model-for-the-21st-century-newsroom-pt3/">the &#8216;What&#8217; of my &#8216;Five Ws and a H that should come <em>after </em>every story&#8217;.</a></p>
<p>I&#8217;m currently preparing an article on social bookmarking for journalists. <strong>Does anyone know of any other examples of it being used in public by journalists?</strong></p>
<p>Oh, and by the way: to learn more about delicious and social bookmarking, <a href="http://del.icio.us/paulb/socialbookmarking" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/del.icio.us/paulb/socialbookmarking?referer=');">see my suggested links here</a> and <a href="http://del.icio.us/paulb/delicious" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/del.icio.us/paulb/delicious?referer=');">here</a>.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s the question Birmingham Post reporter Joanna Geary <a href="http://joannageary.wordpress.com/2008/04/06/interaction-on-business-news-websites/http://joannageary.wordpress.com/2008/04/06/interaction-on-business-news-websites/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/joannageary.wordpress.com/2008/04/06/interaction-on-business-news-websites/http_//joannageary.wordpress.com/2008/04/06/interaction-on-business-news-websites/?referer=');">has been asking herself</a>, and has come up with the following rather lovely graphic:</p>
<p><a href="http://joannageary.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/overview.jpg" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/joannageary.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/overview.jpg?referer=');"><img src="http://joannageary.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/overview.jpg?w=400" alt="" width="400" height="183" /></a></p>
<p>Clickon the image for a larger, more readable version &#8211; you&#8217;ll see she&#8217;s looking for availability of email contacts, use of things like maps, blogs, bookmarking, video (is that interactive? Or multimedia?), email newsletters, mobile alerts, RSS, podcasts, chats, forums &#8211; and Twitter: &#8220;I know it’s not yet a mass communication device but I think it’s a good indicator of those who are thinking about the development of the market&#8221;<span id="more-748"></span></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s her findings:</p>
<p>&#8220;There’s an indication that regional news is a little behind the nationals when it comes to interactive features &#8211; but some regionals, such as <a href="http://www.birminghampost.net/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.birminghampost.net/?referer=');">The Post</a> and <a href="http://www.ldpbusiness.co.uk/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.ldpbusiness.co.uk/?referer=');">LDP Business</a> are catching up.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think there a few limitations with the categories that are provided and naming individual elements of interactivity does not necessarily give you a strong insight into the experience of the user (e.g. there’s no point having video if no one can figure out how to get to it).&#8221;</p>
<p>She&#8217;s <a href="http://joannageary.wordpress.com/2008/04/06/interaction-on-business-news-websites/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/joannageary.wordpress.com/2008/04/06/interaction-on-business-news-websites/?referer=');">asking</a>:</p>
<ul>
<li>&#8220;how is your experience of a news site improved, or indeed made worse, by interactive tools?</li>
<li>&#8220;if there are tools that you think this study is missing.</li>
<li>&#8220;Also, are there any similar studies out there?&#8221;</li>

<p>What happens when you bring together local journalists, bloggers, web publishers, online journalism experts and new media startups &#8211; and get them talking?</p>
<p>That was the question that JEEcamp sought to answer: an &#8216;unconference&#8217; around journalism enterprise and entrepreneurship that looked to tackle some of the big questions facing news in 2008: how do you make money from news when information is free? Where is the funding for news startups? How do you generate community? What models work for news online?<span id="more-930"></span></p>
<p>Half the attendees represented the people behind the mainstream media&#8217;s attempts to get to grips with the web &#8211; the hyperlocal sites of the Teesside Gazette; the mapping and crowdsourcing of the Manchester Evening News; the blogs of the Birmingham Post.</p>
<p>The other half represented what is clear is an emerging cottage journalism industry: niche news websites; local blogs; citizen journalism and news prediction services.</p>
<p>Rick Waghorn&#8217;s keynote speech on his experiences of establishing and expanding <a href="http://MyFootBallWriter.com" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/MyFootBallWriter.com?referer=');">MyFootBallWriter </a> set things going perfectly. In particular his negative experiences of Google AdSense found a very receptive audience: despite 400,000 page impressions over the summer, he said, his AdSense revenues were only $180, while in seven years the most popular Harry Potter website has earned only $6,500 from the scheme. <a href="http://journalismenterprise.com/jeecamp-live-coverage/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/journalismenterprise.com/jeecamp-live-coverage/?referer=');">Following proceedings online</a>, Graham Holliday added: &#8220;Bang on on Adsense &#8211; I do around 50,000 per month and make $100 &#8211; $150 off of it.&#8221;</p>
<p>The verdict from Rick: &#8220;Clearly if anybody is going to earn a living, it cannot be through Google Ads.&#8221;</p>
<p>Instead Rick explained his own business model &#8211; a combination of old-fashioned local ad sales; a self-built ad service, Addiply; affiliate sales; and syndication to those big publishers looking to add more local coverage to their global brands.</p>
<p>This was an &#8216;unconference&#8217;, so after Rick&#8217;s speech the emphasis was on discussion and exchanging experiences. The group discussing community <a href="http://www.charliebeckett.org/?p=492" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.charliebeckett.org/?p=492&amp;referer=');">spoke of the problem of users&#8217; &#8220;sporadic involvement</a>&#8220;; of journalists not connecting with people online; technological barriers to instant publishing; <a href="http://tomscotney.com/2008/03/14/response-from-jeecamp-1/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/tomscotney.com/2008/03/14/response-from-jeecamp-1/?referer=');">the need for journalists to become brands</a>. There was an anecdote about bloggers recruited by the Birmingham Post &#8216;scooping&#8217; the paper by scheduling embargoed news to go live the minute the embargo was lifted. (Not that the journalist concerned felt this was a bad thing).</p>
<p>The group discussing business models scratched their heads at the possibility of OhMyNews&#8217; tip jar model working elsewhere and why it didn&#8217;t make a profit from ads and syndication; whether big publishers should buy up startups; and the problems of aggregation, <a href="http://www.martinstabe.com/blog/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.martinstabe.com/blog/?referer=');">Martin Stabe</a> arguing that the only aggregators that had any chance of success were those that added something, such as geotagging.</p>
<p>The funding group talked of the importance of five year financial forecasts; how to tackle web-ignorant banks; why there was a need for a British equivalent of the Knight Foundation; and how angel investors want to see a big existing market because the risks of complete failure are lower.</p>
<p>And the online news models group discussed how journalism is not just about reporting, but networking; the importance of interaction on every level rather than simply forums; and the need to get out alerts, while ensuring accuracy.</p>
<p>The event was <a href="http://journalismenterprise.com/jeecamp-live-coverage/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/journalismenterprise.com/jeecamp-live-coverage/?referer=');">covered live</a> by a team of <a href="http://www.mediacourses.com/courses.asp?cat=1&amp;courseID=6" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.mediacourses.com/courses.asp?cat=1_amp_courseID=6&amp;referer=');">journalism degree</a> students using <a href="http://journalismenterprise.com/jeecamp-live-coverage/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/journalismenterprise.com/jeecamp-live-coverage/?referer=');">CoverItLive at JournalismEnterprise.com</a>, which enabled people to contribute to the discussion &#8211; and create discussions of their own &#8211; online.</p>
<p>In addition there was a <a href="http://journalismenterprise.com/jeecamp/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/journalismenterprise.com/jeecamp/?referer=');">JEEcamp aggregator</a> which pulled together blog posts, images, video, bookmarks and tweets following the event, and a <a href="http://xfruits.com/paulbradshaw/?id=37819" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/xfruits.com/paulbradshaw/?id=37819&amp;referer=');">Twitter aggregator</a> pulling together tweets from attendees. Video of the event should appear on the <a href="http://ejc.net" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/ejc.net?referer=');">European Journalism Centre website</a>. <a href="http://alpha.bambuser.com/channel/markmedia/video/8713?page=" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/alpha.bambuser.com/channel/markmedia/video/8713?page=&amp;referer=');">Video of Rick&#8217;s speech was live streamed by Mark Comerford</a>.</p>
<p>Reflections on the event worth reading elsewhere include <a href="http://newswireblog.wordpress.com/2008/03/15/reflections-on-jeecamp/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/newswireblog.wordpress.com/2008/03/15/reflections-on-jeecamp/?referer=');">Azeem Ahmad&#8217;s report on the day</a>; <a href="http://olago.wordpress.com/2008/03/14/jeecamp-destaques-highlights/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/olago.wordpress.com/2008/03/14/jeecamp-destaques-highlights/?referer=');">Alex Gamela&#8217;s online highlights</a>; <a href="http://blogs.journalism.co.uk/editors/category/jeecamp/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/blogs.journalism.co.uk/editors/category/jeecamp/?referer=');">Journalism.co.uk&#8217;s reports</a>; <a href="http://www.charliebeckett.org/?p=492" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.charliebeckett.org/?p=492&amp;referer=');">Charlie Beckett on community</a>; <a href="http://peteashton.com/2008/03/hubdub_is_a_game/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/peteashton.com/2008/03/hubdub_is_a_game/?referer=');">Pete Ashton on news as a game</a>; and <a href="http://outwithabang.wordpress.com/2008/03/16/talking-the-talk-while-trying-to-walk-the-walk/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/outwithabang.wordpress.com/2008/03/16/talking-the-talk-while-trying-to-walk-the-walk/?referer=');">Rick Waghorn&#8217;s blog posts written after the event</a>.</p>
<p>The day ended with a panel discussion of some of the emerging issues. As I looked out at the people gathered it occurred to me that in ten years time one half would probably have bought out the other half.</p>
<p>The question is, which half will be which?</p>

			</a>
		</div>
<p>As you have probably worked out, this year&#8217;s Online Journalism students have been building up towards launching an environmental news website. This week the site went public, and I thought I&#8217;d take the opportunity to reflect on the lessons learned so far&#8230;</p>
<h2><b>The Background</b></h2>
<p>The site is the final year project of two final year <a href="http://www.mediacourses.com/courses.asp?cat=1&amp;courseID=6" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.mediacourses.com/courses.asp?cat=1_amp_courseID=6&amp;referer=');">journalism degree</a> students &#8211; <a href="http://newswireblog.wordpress.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/newswireblog.wordpress.com/?referer=');">Azeem Ahmad</a> and <a href="http://rachaelwilson.wordpress.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/rachaelwilson.wordpress.com/?referer=');">Rachael Wilson</a>. The decision was made to launch an environmental site because of the increase of investment in this area from a number of news organisations, and also because of a local connection &#8211; more of which later.</p>
<p>Azeem is responsible for the more technical side of the site, which he has built from scratch using the open source content management software Joomla.</p>
<p>Azeem has been <a href="http://newswireblog.wordpress.com/2008/02/08/green-light-for-environmental-news-site/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/newswireblog.wordpress.com/2008/02/08/green-light-for-environmental-news-site/?referer=');">blogging his progress with the software</a>, including the frightening experience of <a href="http://newswireblog.wordpress.com/2008/02/28/i-pwn-the-h4xorz-and-were-going-public/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/newswireblog.wordpress.com/2008/02/28/i-pwn-the-h4xorz-and-were-going-public/?referer=');">having the site hacked into by the creator of a theme</a> Azeem installed.</p>
<p>Rachael has the responsibility for editorial, which means writing for the site herself, but more importantly managing 14 second year students on the Online Journalism module as they try to build a news site on a subject most have never written about. She&#8217;s also been <a href="http://rachaelwilson.wordpress.com/2008/02/15/preparing-for-%e2%80%98green%e2%80%99-to-go-live/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/rachaelwilson.wordpress.com/2008/02/15/preparing-for-_e2_80_98green_e2_80_99-to-go-live/?referer=');">blogging her experiences</a>.</p>
<h2>Week One: Choosing a name, assigning beats, making connections</h2>
<p>After some cheesy brainstorming, the very literal name &#8216;<a href="http://environmentalnewsonline.com/" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/environmentalnewsonline.com/?referer=');">Environmental News Online</a>&#8216; was chosen for the site for the simple reasons of search engine optimisation and domain name availability. The abbreviation &#8216;ENO&#8217; lent it more character.<span id="more-916"></span></p>
<p>In week one I introduced the <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2007/09/17/a-model-for-the-21st-century-newsroom-pt1-the-news-diamond/">principles of the &#8217;21st century newsroom&#8217;</a> students would be working within.</p>
<p>The team of reporters were introduced to their editors and asked to pick their roles from a list. That meant correspondents for each continent, for particular sectors (e.g. business), and correspondents specifically for grassroots stories.</p>
<p>They were asked to sign up to Twitter and begin twittering what they did as they got to grips with their new role <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2008/02/15/teaching-students-to-twitter-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly/">(it didn&#8217;t work straight away &#8211; more on that here</a> &#8211; <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2008/02/16/introducing-journalists-to-twitter-what-id-do-differently/">and here</a>).</p>
<p>And they were introduced to RSS readers and social bookmarking as they began gathering leads and stories.</p>
<h2>Week Two: blogs and slackers</h2>
<p>The second week began with the first news conference, with all reporters in attendance and hosted by the two editors 30 minutes before the lesson was due to begin.</p>
<p>In the lesson, once they&#8217;d started to explore their areas they were asked to set up individual reporters&#8217; blogs &#8211; but not before they <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2008/02/20/brainstorming-environmental-blogs/">brainstormed blogging ideas</a>.</p>
<p>In retrospect this brainstorming has proved particularly fruitful, as students have been <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2008/02/22/environmental-blogs-the-first-week/">more creative in their blogging than in previous years</a>, and a number of blogs have attracted comparatively significant audiences.</p>
<p>Equally significantly, students were strongly encouraged to comment on other blogs and engage with the blogosphere generally.</p>
<p>In the same week a system was introduced to tackle the problem that every lecturer (and most editors) has: <b>team members who don&#8217;t pull their weight.</b></p>
<p>The system was the same as is used in most professional environments: if a team member did not pull their weight, they would at first receive a verbal warning, then a written warning, and finally be &#8216;sacked&#8217;. Sacking meant they would not have publishing rights on the website.</p>
<p>Reasons for warnings would include persistent lateness; absence without leave; and failure to meet deadlines. Warnings would be decided upon and issued by the editors, Azeem and Rachael.</p>
<h2>Week Three: The content management system</h2>
<p>With students getting to grips with Twitter, and blogging well too, the CMS was introduced. As the team began to use the freshly-built system it quickly became clear that tweaks were needed: Azeem added new navigation links to different news sections (Joomla is clearly intended for sites where &#8216;news&#8217; is just one section of content among others), and the option for reporters to submit different story types up front.</p>
<p>Over the following week Azeem added a number of features to the site: comments were top of the list, along with the facility to email to a friend, and for reporters to tag the article. Social bookmarking features were also added.</p>
<p>Testing was too often overlooked, though &#8211; it was only through a user email that we realised the comments feature was not working for users. It was fixed thanks to online dialogue between Azeem and OJB contributor Alex Gamela.</p>
<h2>Week Four: UGC and images</h2>
<p>By week four some problems emerged: too many students had still not posted an item to the news site, despite some of them having suitable material already on their blog. There seemed to be a fear of publishing on the site what they were happy to publish on the blog.</p>
<p>Conversely, those who <i>had </i>published to the site had too often written in a style that was appropriate for a blog, but not for a news website, particularly in terms of opinion and subjectivity.</p>
<p>Inflexibility of style is a common problem for journalism students &#8211; so this became a good way to drive the point home when looking at the same story on different platforms.</p>
<p>A further interesting issue was the reporters&#8217; leaning towards a &#8216;local&#8217; angle, or assuming that the reader knew, for instance, that they were talking about Birmingham, UK and not Birmingham, Alabama. After years of writing local news, getting into thinking of international audiences was not proving easy.</p>
<p>This week also saw the first verbal warnings for not posting to the website or to the blogs. Attendance and punctuality, however, was excellent.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, students were learning about user generated content with not one but two guests from the news industry &#8211; Tim Hood of Yoosk and Jo Geary, who is managing a bloggers project at the Birmingham Post.</p>
<p>The class workshop was to not only browse Flickr for images to go with a news story of theirs, but also to approach the photographer to clear copyright and find out the story behind it. Once again, this was about engaging with the community, not just taking from them.</p>
<p>The week we chose to go public turned out to be a great one for our field: <a href="http://environmentalnewsonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=41&amp;Itemid=42" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/environmentalnewsonline.com/index.php?option=com_content_amp_task=view_amp_id=41_amp_Itemid=42&amp;referer=');">the Greenpeace airport protest</a> opened the week; then came <a href="http://environmentalnewsonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=43&amp;Itemid=55" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/environmentalnewsonline.com/index.php?option=com_content_amp_task=view_amp_id=43_amp_Itemid=55&amp;referer=');">the earthquake</a> which <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2008/02/27/student-journalists-cover-the-uk-earthquake/">one student stayed up all night to report on</a>; and finally <a href="http://environmentalnewsonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=48&amp;Itemid=55" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/environmentalnewsonline.com/index.php?option=com_content_amp_task=view_amp_id=48_amp_Itemid=55&amp;referer=');">more airport protestors climbed onto the roof of the Houses of Parliament</a>.</p>
<p>In under four weeks from a standing start and with no prior experience in the field or with the technology, 16 students have produced the beginnings of a sound news operation across three platforms (Twitter, blogs and website) and three stages of the 21st century newsroom (alert, draft and article). It will be interesting to see what they do in the next few months as we tackle podcasting, video, interactivity and other ideas.</p>
