Books on data journalism as a profession
Data journalism isn’t just the application of a practical skill, but a profession with a culture, a history, and non-technical practices.
Secret Manoeuvres in the Dark looks at how private companies and police have used infiltration, surveillance, and fake online personas to develop counterstrategies against campaigners which have implications for journalists. I reviewed it here.
These are books that provide historical context to the hysteria surrounding technologies; that give an insight into the cultural movements changing society; that explore key philosophical issues such as privacy; or that explore the commercial dynamics driving change.
